Stopped by my mechanic today, right as they were lowering my car down onto my fresh !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! motor. Downpipe is already attached to the turbo, and once the motor is mounted, it’s time for the intercooler, charge pipe, intake and catch can. Should have it back tomorrow evening!
There were some question marks about how exactly the piping for the VRSF intercooler works. They got it figured out now but on second thought, maybe I should’ve gone with the smaller !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! that’s maybe $100 more and a direct fit with the factory piping.
Oh well, at least the VRSF has the higher capacity and the piping, while a slight pain, flows better than the stock stuff that the Mishimoto would reuse.

I’ve read step by step DIY’s, but I don’t think I would be confident messing (Read: dismantling) with an N55.

I just saw your post about your engine sucking in water. Did your engine sound like a diesel truck, or was it just throwing the codes? It seems weird that you only be down compression on one cylinder after sucking in enough water to bend a rod, and that the engine wouldn’t sound awful. I had a WRX throw a bunch of misfiring codes after driving through water once, but it was just because the air filter got soaked. Dried out the filter and it was good as new.

Exciting! What kind of power gains are you expecting?

To start with I’m going with the conservative-ish BMW PPK flash , I’m expecting around 330 whp with that flash and these parts. With a more aggressive tune could go up to 360-375 whp.

It was misfiring, stumbling, and eventually shut off entirely. Kind of like a diesel/lawnmower type sound before it shut off. After it dried out my mechanic was able to get it to fire and run but with very bad misfiring and didn’t sound right at all. That may have had something to do with the gallon or so of water he later dumped out of the stock intercooler once he got it out of the car. But with that much water in the intercooler, the fresh motor is probably a good thing. ;)

Nor am I! They dropped the full drivetrain, separated the old motor from the transmission, transferred over the auxiliaries like the manifolds, turbo, etc. and installed new spark plugs and the downpipe. Connected the new motor to the transmission, and lowered the car back onto the drivetrain. They’re doing the intake, intercooler, etc. now.

I wouldn’t want to do it either! Insurance is paying for the labor, and my rental car, so it’s all good. They just took forever to get the claim processed correctly. I’ve been without my car for a month now, but at least I’m getting it back tomorrow with a fresh motor and other goodies.

330 should be plenty of fun for now.

Yup, I’ll be happy with it, stock is about 275 whp so that’s a good increase.
Right now Cobb and MHD are works in progress for my car and I’m just not quite sold on the JB4, so doing the PPK flash for now while I wait for the Cobb and MHD to be sorted out.

Going with a known and proven tune us definitely the best bet. I’ve seen and heard of too many catastrophic issues with higher power, or cheaper, or less proven, or whatever. It just isn’t worth it for an 30-40hp.

The only tune for my car that’s fully available right now is the JB4 and while a lot of people like theirs it’s, like you say, not quite as sorted as I’d prefer.
The Cobb is sorta available but BMW changed the encryption depending on the ECU ROM version and not all ROM versions are supported by Cobb right now, so the only way to buy an AccessPort for my car at the moment is to tell Cobb the ROM version and they can see if it’s on their supported list. Supposedly only a few more weeks now before their latest round of software work is finished.
MHD is an Android app that people love for the N54 but they haven’t released anything concrete for the N55 other than “it’s coming.”
While I may go Cobb or MHD down the road, I didn’t want to mess with JB4, so PPK it is.

A flash flood killed the original one . Insurance paid for this one, and some performance parts they don’t know about. ;)

I’m getting to a point in my life where I can consider a CPO luxury car, but every time I want to browse Autotrader for them, some kind of horror story appears here. ‘BMW engines are gigantic pieces of shit’ ‘Do we have to pick an old V12? Can’t I just choose literal poison instead?’ ‘Well I broke one of the bolts in the V valley of my BMW V8. Oh well. Hope nothin’ bad happens!’ ‘The new engine for my not-even-a-couple-of-years-old BMW came in today! Yay!’
I kinda don’t wanna just get a Lexus or a Infiniti, but these articles/posts are forcing my hand. I really can’t afford to just be without a car every once and a while.

This incident had nothing to do with the quality or lack thereof of BMW motors. I got caught in deeper water than I should’ve drove through. Doesn’t matter what kind of car you have, if your engine sucks up a bunch of water it’s bad news. This storm killed tons of cars of all makes. My insurance appraiser had such a large backlog of claims from the storm it took him a damn week to submit his estimate.
